At Biking for a Better World, we see riding a bicycle as an empowering, enjoyable activity, understood universally and utilized throughout the entire world. We strive to constantly transform the very act of pedaling into a force to make the world a better place.
We are a certified 501(c)(3) California non-profit corporation, established January 2006. In June of 2007, the four founding members of the organization completed an immense task, biking the Pan-American highway from the northern-most road accessible point in Alaska at Prudhoe Bay to the tip of South America at Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina---over 15,000 miles in eight months, unsupported. The ride served as a catalyst to raise nearly $30,000, most of which went towards the building of a school in rural Northern Nicaragua.
We are now continuing our efforts to use bicycling projects to help make the world a better place. In September 2009, Jake Spero, President, and Duncan Sisson, CFO, will ride the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route from the Canada border in Montana to the Mexico border in New Mexico. The route is 2500 miles long and we plan to finish it in 4 weeks, carrying our own gear. The ride will benefit Disabled Sports USA and their summer biking programs (http://www.dsusa.org). The scope of our local following in Tahoe is extensive, as we appeared in the newspapers several times during the course of our journey and after our return. We recently hosted a slide show with over 200 photos from the trip, and had nearly 250 local people come out for it. We also have long-standing relationships with Clif Bar, Zoic, and Smith Optics. We are confident that our new project will draw a lot of attention. We depend on the support of our friends and family and the Tahoe community.
